New photography exhibition in Rīga by Paulius Petraitis / Article

In her first solo exhibition in Latvia, Petraitis focuses on the study of analog and digital materiality in photography. The opening of the exhibition, accompanied by the artist, is May 19 at 6:00 p.m.

“The “Surfaces” exhibition expands on the central theme of the Riga 2022 Photography Biennale – isolation – and offers viewers the opportunity to study the development of informative image coding. The application of the he exhibition explains that photographs are generally considered to be transparent. It is assumed that a photograph is not viewed on the surface of the image, but rather through it to contemplate the scene that an image reveals. This transparency of the medium serves several purposes, in particular, it allows the photographic image to function as the universal language of communication that it is today, the organizers say.

Paulius Petraitis (1985) is an artist, theorist and independent curator based in Vilnius. Her practice revolves around the creation of images within broader social and cultural contexts. Much of his work explores the role of technology in creating meaning and examines how photographic images work in online and offline environments.

The Riga Photography Biennale 2022 takes place in the exhibition halls and urban environment of Riga from April 22 to July 10. A total of eight international exhibitions and an extensive educational program will be offered to spectators during the event.
